A scenic tour through beautiful north-eastern Switzerland along the Appenzell network of railway lines from Gossau to Wasserauen, and from Appenzell to St. Gallen. We take the cablecar to the Säntis mountain summit, and make a diversion over the mountains along the steep rack line from Altstätten into the Rhine valley. We look at the steam history of the line and see track repairs taking place at night when customers are asleep and services suspended. At the old city of St. Gallen we visit the magnificent baroque cathedral and famous monastic library. Shot from train, air and trackside. Informative commentary and music.
