The Gotthard Base Tunnel (57 km long, opened in 2016) and the Ceneri Base Tunnel (15 km long, opened in 2020) are the two largest structures on the new Alpine Transverse. Both railway tunnels were built with a single tube each, relieve the old mountain routes and bring advantages especially for transit freight traffic. The cab ride starts in Zurich and ends at the Chiasso border station. As an exception, the tunnel lighting was switched on in both tunnels for the film ride! So a heartfelt thank you to the SBB.
