Description
Swiss Electric Railcars and Multiple Units Since 1900 by Martin Fisher.
The first Swiss electric railcars appeared in the 1890s. They became more widespread from Edwardian times on the narrow gauge and from the 1920s on the standard gauge, but multiple units were slow to “take off” and only really became common in Switzerland in the present century. Martin Fisher explains how this evolution came about and discusses the differences between the two types of vehicle (not always obvious). He identifies the many varieties in this 320-page A4 hardback book with some 970 photos, 90% in colour. There are over 50 tables of technical data and one specially-drawn map to show where the railways (some long closed) are situated. This time, there are no diagrams, but the book includes some photos to illustrate how carriage interiors have developed over the years. The book follows the previous format by taking the reader through the standard gauge systems (adhesion then rack-and-pinion) and then likewise with the narrow gauge ones.
