SWISS RAILWAYS NEWS – TICKET OPTIONS

There are many different ticket options for travel in Switzerland and below are some that you may wish to consider

Swiss Travel Pass: 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 consecutive days on most rail, ship, tram and bus services, check the seller’s website for full details. Also included free museum admission and discounted mountain railway tickets are included in the pass – click here for more details

Swiss Travel Pass Flex: Similar to Swiss Travel Pass but offering travel for between 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 travel days within one month – days can be consecutive or spread over the month – click here for more details

Half Fare Card: Provides half-fare travel on train and boats and discounts on trams, buses and some mountain transportation.  Valid for month.  It may be useful if you are making a few long-distance ad-hoc journeys, but other options may be more cost effective.  Click here for more details

Interrail / Eurail: Various options for consecutive or non-consecutive days.  Includes travel into neighbouring countries, e.g. if you want to travel in France, Germany, Austria or Italy.  Restricted to rail travel and some smaller and local lines are excluded.  Exclusions also include boats, buses and local services such as trams. Includes two days of travel in the UK, e.g. home to airport, or travel from St Pancras International using Eurostar.  Typically offers better value to Swiss Travel Pass if you only intend to use trains. Click here for more details

Saver Day Pass: Issued by SBB and other Swiss rail companies, the Saver Day Pass offers the same travel opportunities on rail, boat, tram and bus as the Swiss Travel Pass but not museum admission.  Bookable from 6 months before travel up to the day before.  The prices increase as tickets sell, so for the best price you will need to book early.  Click here for more details

Supersaver and Supersaver Flex:  These are equivalent to Advance Tickets in the UK; they are point-to-point tickets, bookable in advance and the earlier you book (up to 6 months before travel) the less you will pay.  The Supersaver ticket does not offer any cancellation or rebooking options whereas the Flex allows a 75% refund if cancelled.  Click here for more details

All of these ticket options require you to show your Passport alongside your ticket when your ticket is checked on the train; failure to do so may mean that you are deemed not to have a valid ticket and incur a fine

The private company Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke (DFB) which runs steam and heritage diesel on the old Glacier Express route between Realp and Oberwald is offering 50% discount for holders of Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex, Swiss Travel Pass Youth and Guest card Andermatt / Sedrun-Disentis.  The discount is NOT available for Interrail and Eurail pass holders.  For more information and to confirm discounts visit DFB website, click here and go to the “What Discounts Apply?” section
